ABSTRACT

"A friend in need is a friend indeed” well elucidates international support amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on a dual-process model of emotional appraisal, this mixed-methods research aims to investigate positive psychological responses to international support. Study 1 is a multilevel investigation of the relationships between perceived support, gratitude evoked, and change in attitude toward the benefactor countries. The moderating role of motivational relevance—the province-level prevalence of COVID-19—is also examined. Study 2 uses text mining to analyze online reviews retrieved from a social media platform. The results substantiate aid-induced gratitude and reciprocity manifested through travel intentions and unravel additional factors of motivational relevance—timing, type of support, political and cultural connotations, and comparative appraisals. Study 3 employs an experimental design to validate the causal relationships and reinforces the dual-appraisal mechanism. Managerial implications are provided for destination marketers and industry practitioners to leverage positive psychology for post-pandemic promotion.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has had a significant negative impact on many industries, tourism being among the most severely impacted. To recover from the crisis speedily, a responsive mode of governance that can draw on different stakeholders’ efforts is required. Through qualitative interviews with key informants from major associations and government offices related to tourism, this study examines how Macao adopted public-private partnership governance to aid the recovery of its tourism industry. Specifically, the study investigates the roles of government and the crisis leader in post-COVID tourism recovery, the changes in consumer markets, and collaborative efforts of tourism business sectors and destination marketing organizations. This study contributes to deciphering how public-private partnerships can help tourism recovery, as well as the importance of crisis leadership in the process. The study also provides suggestions for industry partners regarding how they can act and respond to crises more effectively.

ABSTRACT

Grounded in Weber?s theory of formal and substantive rationality, this study aims to examine the influences of economic and noneconomic factors, namely resident empowerment and trust, on resident support for gaming tourism, a controversial type of tourism development. In particular, with data collected before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the study also examines how resident perceptions of economic and noneconomic benefits of tourism have changed as a result of the pandemic. Findings show that perceived economic benefits and trust in government were significant determinants before and during the pandemic;however, the effects of empowerment seem to be mixed, depending on how controversial gaming tourism was at the time of data collection. Results suggest gaming tourism is viewed more critically during periods of high volume and that when gaming tourism dries up, residents start to become more supportive and to see the economic and noneconomic benefits in a different light.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread social and economic disruptions in the balance of labor market. Our study aims to analyze the career-advancement of medical school graduates during the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated influencing factors. We collected and compared the career-advancement data of medical school graduates at a Chinese teaching hospital from 2016 to 2020. A self-designed 20-element medical graduates employment questionnaire and a Chinese adaptation of the General self-efficacy scale were distributed by the Questionnaire Star platform. Univariate analysis (Pearson's Chi-square-test and Fisher's exact-test) and subsequent binary logistic regression were used. Findings demonstrated that the career-advancement rate of medical graduate students in 2020 is 71.3%, which is significantly lower than that for the preceding 4 years from 2016 to 2019 (p < 0.001). Of the 251 employed medical school graduates, 159 (63.3%) have signed an employment agreement or contract, 83 (33.1%) are pursuing continued education domestically, and 9 (3.6%) have offers from foreign institutions. Univariate analysis revealed statistical differences of medical graduates' employment among various specialties, oral defense completion, job search start date, CV submission times, participation in a probationary period, and self-efficacy. Significant predictors for successful employment were early job search and self-efficacy by logistic regression model (χ2 = 12.719, p < 0.001). Most medical graduates assumed that the COVID-19 pandemic had a major (40.6%) or moderate (48%) impact on career-advancement. The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the career-advancement of medical school graduates in 2020. We should make adaptive changes to improve the career-advancement of medical graduates.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an infectious disease caused by Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has posed a persistent global threat. The transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is wide and swift. Rapid detection of the viral RNA and effective therapy are imperative to prevent the worldwide spread of the new infectious disease. Clustered Regularly-Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)- CRISPR-associated protein (Cas) system is an RNA-directed adaptive immune system, and it has been transformed into a gene editing tool. Applications of CRISPR-Cas system involves in many fields, such as human gene therapy, drug discovery and disease diagnosis. Under the background of COVID-19 pandemic, CRISPR-Cas system shows hidden capacity to fight the emergency in many aspects. This review will focus on the role of gene editing in COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment. We will describe the potential use of CRISPR-Cas-based system in combating COVID-19, from diagnosis to treatment. Furthermore, the limitation and perspectives of this novel technology are also evaluated.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 presents luxury hotels with an unenviable task of maneuvering to secure survival. One of the contingency measures of China's five-star hotels is to salvage revenues by entering online-to-offline (O2O) food delivery platforms. However, both opportunities and risks will ensue. Study 1 has content analyzed customer reviews on the largest O2O food delivery platform in China to probe the key factors of concern. The results show that taste, freshness, and brand credibility remain salient, as in dine-in experiences, while packaging and delivery quality emerge as a result of the integration of the O2O platform, and hygiene due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Interestingly, interaction quality between restaurant staff and customers still plays significant roles with the online channel. Study 2 has further deepened the understanding of luxury restaurants' O2O services through semi-structured interviews with F&B professionals. The results have paved the way for hotel operators to employ tactics on O2O platforms.
